JUNIOR SCHOOL ~ NEWSLETTER 3 - 2008/09 7th November 2008
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Halloween Party held last Friday was a great success with at least 90% pupil and 100% teacher attendance. All the children came in the most creative costumes. Mr Fulton and I had a difficult time trying to identify the most authentic costumes. The HAUNTED HOUSE, created by the Year 11 pupils, was awesome. Some of the pupils were brave enough to visit it in small groups. The weak-hearted ones were accompanied by me and I hope they did not have nightmares that night!
Your support, as always, is much appreciated.
LABELLING OF ALL BELONGINGS As you are aware, your children’s belongings, especially items of clothing can get swapped or mislaid during P.E., etc. I urge all parents to label all your child’s/children’s belongings so that they can be easily identified. For your information all lost and found items are handed over to the Admissions Office.
CLASS TIMETABLES Every child has a copy of the class timetable and must make sure that everything required for the day is packed. There are a small number of children who persistently forget to bring their books, recorders and P.E. kits.
START OF THE DAY In order to instill independence in our pupils, we ask all Parents and Guardians to drop their children off in the foyer. A teacher (Dr. Hocine or Ms Sybil) is on duty every morning and if you have a message for any member of staff, it will be relayed to the person by the teacher on duty.
SCHOOL DISMISSAL I have reminded parents in my previous newsletters that school dismisses at 2.15pm on Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesday to ease the traffic congestion. Parents who do not have children in the Senior School are urged to collect your children by 2.30pm so that the parents with Senior School children can collect their children as soon as the Senior School bell rings.
There are a number of children who are collected even up to 2 hours late. The teachers and guards cannot keep a constant eye on these children and as you know children have a habit of wondering off without being noticed.
Please appreciate that our teaching staff have to do their marking, planning, preparation, and attend meetings after school.
UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES - 3 in 1 Celebration, Saturday, 29th November 2008 from 12.00 noon to 2.00pm. For parents who are new to MIGS, this is a special day for all the pupils, staff and parents. - Parents Day, Saturday, 6th December 2008 from 8.00am to 12.30pm. PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS (Monday, 10th November 2008) The Photographer will be in school to take photos of all the Junior School pupils for this year’s Yearbook.
Please ensure that your child is properly groomed and dressed in full school uniform.

Kind regards.
Mrs Lalitha Chalcraft Head of Junior School

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF STUDIES 11th November 2008
Not surprisingly, school-life continues to very busy and those of you who attended the highly successful Halloween Dance must have enjoyed it as much as I did.
One of the aims of the school is to ensure we continue to grow both culturally and academically and the parents of years 9 and 10 will already be aware of the first of our exciting, educational trips at the end of November. The science and mathematics departments have combined to put together a three day trip to Singapore where they will exposed, not only to a different culture, but also to the unique scientific facilities that are on offer. More educational trips for the end of November will be published soon.
Also, the Senior school camp this year will test our staff and pupils to the limit as we go “Outward Bounds” at Lumut. This has meant a small change in the school calendar to accommodate this and the senior school camp will now take place from 23rd May to 27th May 2009. Please make this amendment on your calendar.
As always, I am always ready and available to discuss any pupil’s progress or any other matter pertaining to their life in the school. You can contact me by email or telephone the school to fix an appointment. Have a great weekend.
Stephen C. Fulton Director of Studies _____________________________________________________________________________________ Senior School Newsletter 5 ~ 2008/2009 14th November 2008
Dear Parents
I had to go back to England on a family matter over the last few days, so I was reminded vividly how fortunate we are to be living in a tropical climate. The cold November days in England are not ones to take lightly, and shivering is an experience which is not particularly pleasant! Returning to the balmy climate of Malaysia does put oneself into a more positive frame of mind.
Just before I left Malaysia, I was watching the U15s playing on the upper field against ISKL. It was a close game, and once more it was heartening to see so many pupils supporting the team. I noticed one of the ISKL parents sitting on the sidelines watching her son. She beckoned me over, since we have met on a number of touchlines in the past, and said she wished to speak to me about one of the Mutiara pupils. My heart sank. What unfortunate incident was she going to relate?
She wanted to congratulate the school on the attitude of our pupils. One of our Year 9 girls had, unprompted, asked her a number of questions which showed she was clearly concerned about her welfare. The mother was almost in shock! “In all my years involved in international schools, this has never happened before!” It was clear that the reputation of the School will now always be high in her estimation, and the conversation ended with smiles all around.
The incident highlighted how much of an impact good manners and the concern for others is in this hectic world of ours. We have the advantage at MIGS of having pupils and staff who stay longer here than in other international schools, allowing consistency, continuity, and more profound relationships to be fostered.
Sport The U15s took part in a football tournament hosted by the Japanese School. For a number of reasons this tournament will be remembered for many years, and not for everything that happened on the pitch! Suffice it to say that the pupils once again represented the School very fittingly, and had some excellent performances. Victories against the Australian School (6-0), and Sayfol (2-1) were augmented by another solid performance against ISKL (0-0). The team would lose to the eventual winners 2-0. The team came in the top five of the ten competing teams, many of whom are far bigger than us. Compared to last year when the team was only able to draw one of its matches, we can now begin to compare ourselves with how we did twelve months ago, and the improvement is for all to see.
Next week there is a U17 7-a-side tournament at ELC on Wednesday 19th November. Please support the team if you can.
Lost items May I just remind you all of the importance of keeping valuables in a locker, or under the security of the Admissions Office, or with a member of staff. This ensures that items don’t simply disappear, but also ensures that pupils don’t mistakenly think that their property has been stolen.
Bags There are more than enough places for the storage of bags around the school. Pupils are still dumping them in corridors when playing PE or having lunch. They should not be surprised if the bags are removed, since they make the school look untidy, can create a safety issue, and demonstrates little care for one’s property. Therefore pupils should not be surprised in future if the bags are removed by staff, and locked away – causing inconvenience, and I hope a lesson learnt!
Pupil Safety There have been a few instances recently, in which drivers have been speeding whilst on School grounds when dropping off pupils. Please be aware of the safety procedures, since Pupil Safety is our paramount concern. The vast majority of cars are driven sensibly, but you will appreciate that some are inviting a nasty accident which none of us want. I am sure all of you will understand that the School will have no choice but to deny entry to drivers who speed, or do not drive with due care and attention, whilst on School property.
Important Events Although we might not wish to start thinking about it, the end of term is looming. We have some very important events coming up, especially the Three-in-One celebrations on Saturday, 29th November 2008 from 12.00pm to 2.30pm. Please try to keep your diary open for that weekend. Many of you will remember how successful it was last year. Indeed I still have some photographs of that day pinned in my office. There will be more details next week. May I just ask that if any parents want to be involved in the football match against the pupils on Sunday, 30th November 2008, please inform Mr. Eduardo of your interest.
Wishing you as warm a November as possible!
